About Badlands Soap

The Basics

My base recipe is a mixture of Beef Tallow, Olive oil, Coconut oil, Almond Oil, Vitamin E and Lye. I also use essential oils, fragrance oils, honey and botanicals in various soaps. There are people who are afraid of Lye Soap. The truth is, you can’t make soap without it. If someone tells you that there has not been any lye added to their soaps, it’s because they are using what’s called a melt-and-pour soap. It’s like baking a cake from a box. It’s still called homemade, but it’s not from scratch.  Our soaps are from scratch.

When the lye and the fats are mixed together, they do what’s called ‘saponify’. They mix together to form something new. When the saponification starts, the soap looks like vanilla pudding. This is the time we add the scents, colors and any botanicals we may be using. It gets poured into our molds and in two days time it is ready to cut. After it has been cut, it must cure or air dry for two weeks.

This allows the remaining water to evaporate from the soap creating a hard bar. Our soaps produce tiny bubbles similar to foam, and will last in the shower a very long time. I’ve used our soap on our children since they were tiny babies, so you’ll know it’s mild. Now, let’s move on to the ‘flavors’

The Badlands Soap Flavors

SAGE - Sage is a Native American favorite. The plant itself is used for smudging and religious purposes. The soap is white and contains sage leaves locally gathered from our ranch.

LAVENDER - Lavender is known for its soothing effect. It is a spicy scent colored light pink with lavender flowers mixed in.

WILD PRAIRE ROSE- This is wonderful rose scent. In the late spring the wild rose bushes are in full bloom. The aroma is intoxicating and uplifting. It is colored a slightly darker pink.

SWEETGRASS - Sweet grass is another plant important to the Native Americans. It was used as a perfume and burned as incense to induce the presence of good influences. Mine is colored green with actual sweet grass in every bar.

PINE - Pine was used daily by the Native Americans. It's sweet and woodsy scent is like a breath of fresh air. It is colored with cocoa to create a dark brown.

HONEY OATMEAL - This bar is made with oatmeal and locally produced honey. The honey is an astringent that fights bacteria on the skin. It also gives it a slightly sweet smell. This soap is colored with cocoa to a light brown.

LILAC BLOSSOM - If you've ever been to the Badlands you know that there aren't many things that grow here. Lilacs happen to love it here, and they fill my yard for this reason. They're aroma is breathtaking when they are in bloom. I've colored this soap a beautiful violet.

BROWN SUGAR AND FIG - As I was going through Bath and Body Works for some scent inspiration, I came upon this wonderfully warm musky vanilla scent. After a lot of searching I found an awesome knock-off. The bar is cream with coco colored swirls.

EUCALYPTUS/SPEARMINT - This soap is a lightly mint scented. The Eucalyptus grounds the soap so it's not too sweet. I didn't color this soap so it's creamy white.

PEACEFUL INTERLUDE - I have blended this soap's oils by mixing Orange, Ylang-Ylang, Grapefruit and a few other oils. The result is a refreshingly light sweet and citrus soap. It's been colored with a light yellow.

COOLING MENTHOL- A blend of peppermint, wintergreen, nutmeg, menthol crystals and other essential oils. It's very good after a long hard day. This soap actually makes the skin feel cool and tingly. It has soothing, anti-itch properties. Dynamite soap. Nicer than just peppermint. This blend is mellowed out, so it's not to strong. You will know this soap by its cream and green swirls.

CACTUS BLOSSOM - A very nice fragrance! We've captured the earthy/floral essence of the Badlands in a bar of soap! This soap will let your memory travel back to the Badlands every time you use it. The bar is cream with light yellow swirled throughout.

DOUBLE MINT - It's exactly what it says it is. Spearmint soap combined with Peppermint soap is a surprisingly awesome combination. The mint oils in the soap will leave your skin tingly and cool. The color of this soap is cream with light blue pulled through.

TANGERINE - Picture yourself picking a fresh tangerine. Imagine the scent as you pull the peel away. That's exactly what you'll have every time you use this soap. It is a wonderfully fresh scent. It has more depth than orange. I've colored this soap… you guessed it, Tangerine orange.

Dakota Wildflower- is a heavier sweet/floral scent. It reminds me of the prairie flowers on a hot summer's day. The color is violet and yellow.

Cinnamon Sandalwood - has a rich warm scent from the cinnamon and a sensual and sexy hot from the sandalwood. It will simply make you say…mmmm. The soap is colored with cinnamon which also gives it a slight exfoliating quality.

Yucca Blossom - Yucca Blossom is a soft floral scent. It's very sensual and colored pink and yellow.
